The geographical characteristics of Aragón have turned it into a major player in the field of renewable energy production. 44% of primary energy produced there comes from renewable sources, and this is estimated to rise to 63.6% by 2012.
Aragón offers:
- Vigorous research capacity in renewable energies at the University of Saragossa:
- Capacity for the production of electricity generating technology: R&D in the field of aero-generators, solar panels, electricity elements.
- A huge largely unpopulated territory ideal for the installation of sources of energy that use land extensively.
- Supply of water from the Pyrenees with reservoir capacity of 2,100 Hm3.
- A high capacity electricity network capable of incorporating new electricity generation plants.
- Direct solar radiation conditions similar to those in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
- A vigorous industrial sector.
- 70% of the electrical energy consumed in Aragón comes from renewable sources.
- Wind energy: 1,713 MW installed; target of 4,000 MW by 2012
- Solar energy: target of 105 MW installed by 2012
